Who We Are
In Her Shoes is an employment and training program and social enterprise through the YW Kitchener-Waterloo (previously known as the YWCA Kitchener-Waterloo) for women who are interested in starting their own online business and are experiencing barriers to traditional employment. The program started in 2018, and our pilot year was funded through an Ontario Trillium Foundation seed grant.
Our Social Enterprise
Our social enterprise is a new and used shoes and accessories bricks and clicks business that operates out of 84 Frederick Street in Kitchener, Ontario. The products we sell come to us through donations and by selling these items both online and at our bricks and mortar store we have created an opportunity for women to learn about business in a real life setting that is low risk and completely supportive. All proceeds from sales go directly back into the In Her Shoes program and our agency to support the work we do with women, girls, and families.
Our Training Program
Our employment and training program is an 8-week program for female, transgender, and gender non-binary folks (Ages 16-65), that takes place at our online and bricks and mortar retail store called In Her Shoes. This program is for participants who are interested in learning more about developing online businesses and self-entrepreneurship, and/or who want to gain valuable job skills in a retail environment. Our goal is to provide participants who experience barriers to employment a skills-based and experiential training that helps them in their journey towards achieving their small business goals.
Each session runs for 8 weeks at a time during the hours of 10 am and 2:30 pm Monday-Friday. During this time participants will have the opportunity to learn from our social enterprise coordinator and will work one three hour shift per week, earning a living wage honorarium.
We will be doing five intakes throughout the course of 2019 where 3 participants will be selected to participate in the program each time. For more detailed information about available sessions and to register please visit our YW Website.
